In a business or formal situation, men tend to wear suits or a smart jacket and trousers. Although ties have been worn less in recent years, their popularity is returning, some say in response to the current economic turn down.

Ties are a way of expressing your personality and roughly speaking, men can be placed into one of six “personality” groups and these can often be distinguished by the ties they keep in their wardrobe.

* Do you have lots of different designs in your tie collection including bow ties and cravats?

If so you are probably “Creative”. You may have hobbies such as writing or music and you tend to bend the dress code rules and wear unusual and noticeable items of clothing. A good example of this group is Sir Bob Geldof or David Bowie.

* Do you have ties that are brightly coloured and flamboyant? When you wear a tie nobody could fail to notice it.

If so you are probably “Dramatic”. You have a zest for life and like fast cars and hi tech gadgets. You like to be noticed when you walk into a room. Famous examples of Dramatics are David Beckham and George Michael.

* Are your ties very personal and you they represent a memory of the time you bought them or a special occasion you wore them to?

If so you are probably “Romantic”. You like to keep yourself fit and healthy. You enjoy luxury and comfort, your clothes are well maintained and you are always appropriately dressed for every occasion. Bryan Ferry and Sting are good examples of a Romantic.

* Are your ties good quality and match your outfit? Are your ties conservative yet smart?

If so you are probably a “Classic”. You are well organised and punctual, and prefer routine to a sudden change of events. Your clothes will always be quite formal and traditional. Prince Charles and Bill Clinton are good examples of a “classic”.

* Do you own one or two ties and wear them when you have to?

If so you are probably a “Natural”. You probably prefer to dress casually as often as possible and you like to participate or watch sport of all kinds. You don’t feel you need to make a statement with the way you dress or the car you drive. Famous examples of this group are Jude Law and Jamie Oliver.

* Do you update your ties regularly so you always have a tie that is modern and chic?

If so you are probably an “International”. You probably prefer sports you can play anywhere like swimming or tennis, you like to be fashionable but never overstated and you prefer your surroundings to be uncluttered and minimalistic. Pierce Brosnan and George Clooney are actors who fit into this group.

The tie you choose can be an indication of your personality, your likes and dislikes. Using this psychology you can adapt your style to suit the situation you are in. Equally you may be able to judge a strangers personality to an extent by observing his tie.
