You are what you say

You are not what you say although what you say represents some of your views, feelings and information. Most of the people talk about the information they have of different things. The information does not really reflect their inner self. The information is what they have learnt, not what they believe in or what they feel. What you say represents your state at a particular moment. You may not mean at all what you say or you mean what you do not say. You may not believe in what you say or you may believe in them. What you say maybe instinctively or it may be thought out carefully. The result is that what you say does show how you are, not what you are.

What you say gives impressions to other people and project an image of you in other people. That image maybe genuine or false. What you say is less important than how you say it. All of communication skills experts believe that the way you say something is more important than what you say. What you say does not represent you but how you say it represents you. How you say something involves your body posture, your feelings, your skills, the tone of your speech and the tune that you employ to express yourself. What you say is affected by your mental states and your body state. Therefore what you say can make a great difference and how you say it can make even bigger difference, a greater difference in the effectiveness of your expression.

Every industry has them and every sales department relies on them to get new products to the market place using a platform aimed at impressing their vendors, customers and peers. Trade shows and in turn tradeshow exhibits have been a staple of industry since the beginning of marketing and it’s one of the most competitive atmospheres a company can put themselves into.

Trade shows are unique due to the fact that in one building you’ll find people competing for the same market or demographic vying for the admiration of independent sales reps. Resellers, customer’s and product vendors. This type of environment can yield wild success and really put a company or new product on the map, it can also spell defeat for a small company that has put all of their time and money into a single product.

In many cases one product in a given field differs slightly from the next and a company slogan or mantra can only take a new, untested product so far. So, how does a company break the barrier between “just another one of the same” to the “must have” hit of the trade show?

I read an article in the newspaper some time ago written by a professor who felt that PowerPoint was not a good tool to use and was on the decline.

At Central IT Training we have not found this to be the case. In fact we are providing more PowerPoint training now than in previous years, which would suggest that it is becoming more popular.

I think the problem with PowerPoint presentations is more to do with how they are constructed. To create a good PowerPoint presentation, it is important not to fall into any of the traps.

Too much text on each slide
If slides contain a lot of text, the size of the font has to be reduced in order for it all to fit on the slide. The smaller the text is the harder it is to read, so be brief, bullet points are all that is needed. Each bullet point should briefly detail each topic to be covered.

First of all, going through the process of choosing a great topic could be an enjoyable experience. Looking for topics that you are passionate about could be even more enjoyable. Once you decide what your public speaking topic is.Then, go and do your homework. There are a lot of information sources as you know, but the best one is “libraries» as you will find reliable as well as credible books and documents. This is of course is very important when you have a topic related to human sciences,history,education,business…etc.However,If your presentation revolves around a current and up-to-date issue. Then Libraries are not the suitable source. The internet however is the place to get information from as it contains the most current topics and issues all over the world.

When invited (or ordered!) to give a presentation or a speech, most of us think that what comes out of our mouth during that 5, 10, or 45 minute delivery is the ‘piece de resistance’ when in fact, without proper preparation, it may be a disaster.

I liken good preparation to the 5 Ws of good investigative work, much like good journalism. Before you even prepare that speech or presentation, it is important to know who, what, where, when & why.

1. To Whom will you be speaking? The type of group you will be addressing will effect how you will speak to them. Talking to seniors in high school is different than talking to a group of insurance brokers. Your language will be slightly different as will your style of delivery. Knowing your audience means knowing their reason for attending your presentation.

2. About What will you be speaking? While this may seem obvious, such is not always the case. Let’s say for example, you are a botanist and your mother at the retirement center wants you to give a talk to her gardening club. Giving a more generalized talk about perennials and annuals, for instance, is going to be of much greater interest to these retired senior citizens than discussing plant biochemistry.

First, you need to make sure that there is a strong connection between the product being sold and the people you’re giving your presentation to. This sounds obvious, but what many companies do is try to draw in a broad audience to appeal to the largest pool of people possible.

What you’ll end up doing is failing to intrigue the people who wouldn’t have had interest in your product to begin with, and fail to sell to the people you could’ve invited had you been a little more focused in your audience.
