Many people often use the terms group and team interchangeably, but there are differences in the real world corporate applications. We have very often heard many leadership courses often speaking on the importance of the team building events and not the group building events. Some of the differences which can be enumerated between the terms team and the group are as follows: The strength of the team relies on the fact that the members of a team have similarities in the purpose and there is interconnectivity between the individual members and on the other hand the group is larger in number and the group’s strength could be assessed from the fact that they need to be willing to execute the commands of a leader.
It is very easier to form a group than a team for example if you had a room filled with professional doctors then the doctors could be grouped on the basis of their gender, age, specializations or any other common practice. Hence it is very easy to form a group based on some common traits, however the effectiveness of the different groups would not be similar. The interpersonal difference between the different individuals could range from good compatibility to the other extreme level of complete intolerance levels; these interpersonal dynamics within a team can make the consensus within the group a tough task.

There are many articles written about the topic of team building, team forming, and team-work. It is no doubt that effective team is an essential and valuable asset to an organization whether it is in public or private sector. No matter the organization is operated with sound financial health or struggling for survival. In order to enhance the success of team-work, the individual team member’s behavior contributes tremendously on the smooth and successful running of a team. The following three elements are very important for result-oriented team which can be summarized as 3Cs: Coherence, Congruence, and Cooperation.
Coherence
The basic goal of a team is to fulfill a purpose and members are mutually accountable for achieving common goals. If team members do not work together to achieve a goal and without a force to pull each other in, the ultimate result will not be able to be delivered. Thus, the coherence has to be existed to maintain the spirit of team work.
It is an indisputable trend that teams are increasingly the primary means for organizing work in business. Trust is an essential contributor to interpersonal cooperation necessary for successful teamwork, and this is a business investment that should not be overlooked. Furthermore, based on the recent and increasing calamities in business, trust is also becoming a central concept to many of the more recent approaches to leadership. In essence, trust often involves the “willingness to be vulnerable” and builds on expectations that are in part emotional. Moods and emotions interact with values and attitudes to determine the experience of trust.
Often we begin relationships with the assumption of trust; since it is the easier that way. However, future trust is determined by subsequent behavioral exchanges. If parties share positive emotions, it is a strong signal that they have succeeded in building trust. Provisional trust is the willingness to conduct the transaction as long as the other party behaves appropriately. Conditional trust is sufficient to conduct a wide range of activities but not nearly as powerful as unconditional trust, when relationships become significant and often involve a sense of mutual identification.
Corporate Team building is beneficial not only in improving the work environment but also glorifies the personal life and personality of a person. Decision making, enhancement in communication skills and self confidence are some important factors that help in minimizing stress and refreshing ones ability to think and adjust to the surroundings.
People in every workplace talk about team building activities ideas but only a few understand how to develop and work as an effective team. Thus it is very important to organize team building events exercises workshops at regular intervals. Working as a team is a feeling that makes you realize your importance as a team member and gives you a feeling of being something larger than yourself. And this feeling in turn leads to the better understanding of company’s goals and objectives. Corporate drumming can be a good team building exercise to inspire and motivate teams of people.
Now the question arises-How can you self diagnose that you team efforts are living up to your expectations?. And a very simple answer is to prepare a check list. A focused work team that produces effective results requires attention to each of the following:

Communicating With Others
We constantly interact with, and relate to others and the world around us. Effective communication is essential for us to resolve problems and evaluate solutions, to be able to listen well, to motivate ourselves and others, to speak effectively, and to ask the right questions to get the right information we require. The way we sit, stand or walk, our facial expressions, the way we dress, the house we live in, the car we drive, all communicate some message about ourselves and the way we think to others.
Communication can be simply described as a sender delivering a message to a receiver. Perception impacts significantly on communication. The way the message is intended by the sender may be quite different from the way the receiver perceives the message. Perception can be described as a pair of spectacles through which we process all the messages received from others. It varies according to how each individual is influenced by experience, attitudes and beliefs.
